...Because I'm in crap shape compared to where I should be.
I did some forms outside and then went inside (to escape the mosquitos) and worked on some really basic strike/block combinations required in the new curriculum we're using. Once I can do them convincingly and without having to concentrate 100% I'll start my students on them.
Have to do this with all the techniques so I know the sequences as well as the details of each one well enough to not use a cheat sheet in… Continue

Strange day today. I went to the gym early and hit the weights, then went out to my car to rest and have a snack before my Jujitsu class at 7pm. I got a call to tell me that our instructor Dave had gone to St. Agnes Hospital because a cut in his leg had become infected, so could Noah (one of our brown belts) and I manage it? I said sure, though I vaguely wondered why Lalo, our… Continue

Am I the only one who still has problems with right and left? I can look at a book illustration, a photo, a description, or receive direct instruction and STILL I will stride forth with the wrong foot or move in the opposite direction.
Anyway, we fixed the most obvious bloopers in the instruction vids today and I will upload the corrected versions shortly. Of course my guys are now wanting the stuff on DVD as well as on the net.

The class that I teach was a mini-disaster today. A few of my senior students have been pushing for "live" sparring sessions, so two weeks ago I agreed. Everyone has signed waivers and been made aware of the risks, and I made it clear that participation was voluntary. Those who were sparring put on cups, mouth guards, gloves and foot pads. The rules were no elbows or knees… Continue

I'm currently slapping together some footage from a recent workshop at my dojang, where we went through the minimum basic curriculum for the WHF 10th to 1st guep course. The idea is to use them as reminders and as a help to visualization for my students who at the moment have to work on their own a lot. Another newly affiliated dojang in another town will also use the clips for their training.
Some are already up on my YouTube… Continue

I'll probably just end up posting a lot of boring stuff here from my classes. Last night I made them work on two techniques, both hip throws. One where the attacker's abdomen is on your hip, and another where the small of his back is on your hip. Kinda hard to explain without pictures:
Both require a lot of training to…

So all it took was one extra strenuous class to knock the plateau right out on me! Hadn't trained since last Wednesday, a rarity for me. Maybe I just needed time out!!! Maybe it's good to reflect on things a bit. I know I will never be a superior martial artist...but... I really am doing this for myself, I have to remember that! And at my age it's amazing that I can not only keep up but sometimes actually go way beyond other people's limits... (cardio wise and flexibilty)..
