I have wondered lately, how many non Koreans have honestly trained long enough to legitimately attain an 8th or 9th Dan in Hapkido.
For me with all the B.S. out there in ranking and training I find it hard to take most non Korean Hapkidoists with high rank very seriously.
I am trying to learn one of our higher ranking forms from a tape my Sabumnim gave me. It's above my belt level and he wants me to be able to teach it. He is showing me a few steps at a time. I can't seem to follow the tape , I can't seem to work in the reverse. It's fine if I already know the steps but learning a new sequence seems hard. What is your opinion regarding learning forms from tapes? SteelyJan
Hi everyone, I guess I've been super busy with my artwork to write. Still training of course. Last Monday night I attended the 7PM- 9PM+ class taught by Kyosanim. Always a tough class, but worthwhile.
At some point we were working on techniques and someone was talking, she got so upset, first there was a major speech about wasting her time, then we did tons of pushups but some people didn't hold plank position till everyone else was finished so we had to do more then hold in…Continue

I thought that as a black belt it would be a nice thing to have at the awards ceremony to help foster a feeling of brotherhood/sisterhood.
I always wondered what the ring could be designed as to most authentically represent Hapkido.
One of my students is a bouncer, so for his benefit I began putting together a list of escort techniques, or what some call come-alongs or police locks.
In putting together this list I drew from my Hapkido background and also from my training in Kokodo Jujitsu. I also adapted a few techniques from Silat. I spoke to several martial arts instructors, and augmented this by researching videos. I also innovated a few techniques of my own.
So far I have 24 techniques on the list. I…Continue
I teach martial arts but I teach that fighting is an absolute last resort, and only in self-defense. I would rather walk away and let people think I am a coward than hurt another human being needlessly.
I have hurt many people in the past and I don't feel good about any of it. It's not something to boast about.
The world is choking on violence already. We don't need to add even an atom's weight of suffering to it. We need to bring kindness into the world, and laughter, and help…Continue
